What it means to me

My journey of faith

On these pages, some people from All Saints’ share what being a Christian means to them.

Margaret Roberts

My family did not profess any faith and did not go to church.

When a friend invited me to go to Sunday School with her, my mother was reticent because she felt I had to have special clothes. Nevertheless, she bought me what she considered to be a suitable outfit and I went along. There I learnt that being a Christian wasn't a matter of following certain rules about behaviour or dress, rather it was an intimate relationship between ourselves and God through the person of Jesus.

In childlike faith, I accepted the offer of friendship with God and my journey of faith began.

Now many years have passed and my own children are of the age and older than I was then. In those years, I have asked many questions, made many mistakes and learnt many things. The journey of faith is not a straightforward path, but the kernel of my faith remains the same: that God values me and desires my friendship and service.

This fact affects all the areas of my life. It enables me to see the value in all the people I meet in the places that I work and live, and makes me realise that nothing is beyond God's forgiving touch if we truly turn to him. It makes me want to commit all things to God and serve him as my Saviour and my friend.

The more fully I can do this, the more whole I feel.
