As a church we are involved in what God is doing in Laos. Here are some facts about Laos:
- Small, landlocked country about the same size as the UK
- Thinly populated – only 7 million people
- Diverse – over 100 ethnic groups
- Communist since 1975
- Heavily bombed during the Vietnam War
- One of the poorest nations in SE Asia
- Agrarian economy, but tourism, mining (gold and copper) and hydropower are also important sectors of the economy
- Largely unreached with the Gospel - 61% Buddhist, 31% Animist, 4% Atheist, 2% Christian. Persecution of Christians comes both from the authorities and from relatives
- In rapid transition – Laos is changing through increased exposure to the international community and economic development
How can we pray for Laos?
Give thanks
- that the church is growing. There are now believers in every province and amongst many of the tribal groups.
- for spiritual openness especially amongst the tribal animists (those living in fear of spirits)
Ask God for
- recent economic development to benefit all Lao people
- the Lao government to rule with wisdom, justice and for the good of the people
- Lao Buddhists to believe in Christ as they have been very resistant
- Christians to grasp and wisely use opportunities to share the Gospel
- persecuted Christians to stand firm in their faith and for God to work good through their suffering
- everyone in Laos to have an opportunity to hear the Gospel
- healthy reproducing churches in every sector of society, every tribal group and every region of the country
